How to prevent Toddlers from Hitting
Hitting behavior in toddlers typically begins between ages 1 and 3, often peaking around age 2. At this stage, children are still developing language and emotional regulation skills, so they may resort to physical actions like hitting to express frustration, excitement, or unmet needs. Most children outgrow this phase by age 4 as they gain better emotional and verbal skills. If hitting persists or escalates, it’s a good idea to talk with your pediatrician at your wellness visit to discuss community supports.
Tips to Reduce Hitting Behaviors:
Stay calm and avoid yelling.
Watch for triggers and stay nearby to help prevent hitting.
Offer comfort with a hug.
Use simple words to explain their emotions.
Redirect their energy to a toy or activity.
Model gentle touches.
Praise gentle behavior when you see it.
